“Between Crevices” / “Entre Ranuras”
16:43 HD Video and Installation, 2021
In the port area of the city of Bremen, one can find the remains of unroasted coffee beans on the floor, this occurs during the unloading and movement of large containers. After an extremely long travel, most likely from the tropical belt, these beans remain as minute traces of the politics of global trade and the history of colonization. “Between crevices” is a film that deals with the colonial history of the Hanseatic city of Bremen and its close relationship with the trading of coffee. The work plays with a sort of magical and loose intermix of narration made up of poems, footage of the port area, footage from the mountains of El Salvador and sound field recordings.
Together with a group of artists, a dream-like exploration of the area unfolds together with a narrative of personal thoughts on the city and its colonial past, present and future. As part of the logical structure behind the film, the performers drink coffee and let the effects of caffeine take place in their body. This influx of energy is then reflected in the actual tempo and timeline logic of the film.
